How does it do this?
Solar thermal systems work by collecting the sun's energy and converting it in a three step process:
- Evacuated solar collector – which is fitted to the roof, absorbing the sun’s heat and transferring it to the fluid in the solar circuit pipes.
- Solar circuit – this transports the hot fluid from the collectors to the hot water cylinder.
- Hot water cylinder – receives the hot fluid and transfers the heat to the domestic hot water supply
There are three fundamental ways in which Solar energy can be harnessed for use in buildings. Passive heat is received from the sun naturally, and the design of buildings can harness this through orientation and glazing to reduce the need for heating. A second method of using solar energy is through solar thermal systems that provide hot water. The third method is to use Photovoltaic (PV) energy.
