PV solar panels capture the sun's energy using photovoltaic (PV) cells. These cells convert the sunlight into electricity which can be used to run appliances and lighting. PV solar cells don't need direct sunlight to work so the system will still generate electricity even on a cloudy day. PV solar panels are a robust, flexible, scalable technology which can provide energy for domestic, commercial, agricultural and industrial applications. Electric solar panels have a proven working life of 45 years plus and modules typically come with a 25 year performance warranty.

When electricity rather than heat is required, PV solar panels are a robust, flexible, scaleable technology which can provide energy for both houses and other buildings. The typical sized household Solar PV system for example will provide at least 2,000 units of electricity per annum and save at least 1.14 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually.
Sustain Services have all the information you need about the governments Feed in Tariffs and Renewable Heat Incentive - schemes which look to reward the use of solar panels for both home and business use.

The Feed-in Tariffs (FITs) scheme was introduced on 1 April 2010, under powers in the Energy Act 2008.
Through the use of FITs DECC hope to encourage deployment of additional small scale (less than 5MW) low carbon electricity generation, particularly by organisations, businesses, communities and individuals who have not traditionally engaged in the electricity market. This will allow many people to invest in small scale low carbon electricity, in return for a guaranteed payment for the electricity they generate and export.
Photovoltaics (PV) is a method of generating electrical power by converting solar radiation into direct current electricity using semiconductors that exhibit the photovoltaic effect. Photovoltaic power generation employs solar panels composed of a number of cells containing a photovoltaic material. Materials presently used for photovoltaics include monocrystalline silicon, polycrystalline silicon, amorphous silicon, cadmium telluride, and copper indium selenide/sulfide. Due to the growing demand for renewable energy sources, the manufacturing of solar cells and photovoltaic arrays has advanced considerably in recent years.
